WHAT IS SUBSTANCE ABUSE TREATMENT?

When a person continues to use/abuse alcohol or other drugs regardless of negative behaviors this person is most likely in need of assistance as is his family.

There are several types of treatment programs:

Inpatient Treatment
Inpatient treatment, provided in special units of hospitals or medical clinics, detoxification and rehabilitation services. Often times, this form of treatment is used for the assessment process.
Residential Programs
Residential programs provide a living environment with treatment services. Several models of residential treatment exist. Treatment is residential programs last from one month, to one year and possibly more.
Partial hospitalization or Day treatment
Partial hospitalization or day treatment programs may be provided in hospitals or free standing clinics. In these programs, the person attends treatment for to 8 hours per day but lives at home. These programs typically last 3 months and work best for people who have a stable, supportive home environment with family members willing to be a part of the treatment regimen.
Outpatient or Intensive outpatient programs
Outpatient and intensive outpatient programs provide treatment at a program site but the person lives elsewhere (usually at home). Many of these programs are able to operate in the evenings and on weekends so participants may stay in school or continue traditional work schedules.
Methadone clinics or Opioid treatment programs
Methadone clinic or opioid treatment programs offer medication assisted outpatient treatment for people who are dependent on opiod drugs (such as heroin, OxyContin or drugs like vicodin).

An assessment of the individual is necessary to determine the best avenue for treatment. Any of the KKDF coordinators can identify services in their areas or at www.fadaa.org you can look up the directory of statewide treatment options. There are “public” and “private” programs.

The basic elements of treatment are similar throughout most programs. Programs include; Assessment, Medical Care, A Treatment Plan, Individual and Group Counseling, Education, Life Skills Review/Training, Relapse Prevention Education, Self Help support and other related services.
